Flying with a large dog: Navigating the cargo rules

When flying with a large dog, the most common restriction is weight. Most airlines cap in-cabin pets at around 20 lbs (9 kg) including the carrier. If your dog exceeds this, they will likely need to fly as checked baggage or manifest cargo.

Flying in cargo requires an IATA-compliant crate. This means your dog must be able to stand, sit erect, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. Crate dimensions, ventilation, and locking mechanisms are strictly checked at drop-off.
